"Everything will die, everything will pass, only punk and SK will last" (Quote Otze)
Schleimkeim was the most influential punk band in the GDR. The biography of its singer Dieter "Otze" Ehrlich reads more adventurously than any novel. It reflects all the inner turmoil of a nonconformist character in an authoritarian state. In 1980, Otze founded the punk band Schleimkeim in Erfurt with his brother Klaus. There were few but legendary performances, accompanied by scandals and prison stays. After Otze bludgeoned his father to death with an axe in 1998, he was admitted to a psychiatric clinic, where he died in 2005 under unexplained circumstances.
Frank Willmann and Anne Hahn interviewed dozens of contemporary witnesses, band members, friends, fellow musicians, pastors, and social workers. They paint a multifaceted and unvarnished picture of this extraordinary musician and person, thus also providing a piece of GDR history from the inside. One learns a lot about the opposition scene in the GDR, everyday life marked by repression, and the attempts of the church to provide a space for counterculture. The punk and underground movement of the GDR becomes tangible through this life story, which is as exciting as it is sometimes catastrophic.
