Many of the songs in this book were the reason their authors were persecuted, imprisoned, and subjected to repression. Punk bands took the liberty of singing about what the GDR state, with its network of informers and secret services, tried to conceal. The lyrics were hidden behind fire pits and under floorboards or memorized. Recordings often only existed within the closest circle of friends, recorded and taped under the most adverse conditions in basements, churches, and rehearsal rooms. For the first time, a collection of 85 song lyrics from 52 punk bands from the GDR is now available, so that everyone can read the texts. They tell of what young people who stood outside of society and were declared enemies of the state by the GDR experienced and what motivated them. 192 pages with band biographies, illustrated.
