“With this band, you won't have many friends,” the Böhse Onkelz once wrote. Today – three decades later – they are the most successful German rock band with more than two million fans. Hated, loved, idolized. Who are these fans? Have they embraced the changes of the Böhse Onkelz? What significance does the band hold in their lives? How have the band and their fans changed over time? What do the Böhse Onkelz stand for today, a band that has been repeatedly asked by critics to change its name due to its past?

Klaus Farin, the founder of the Archive of Youth Cultures in Berlin, former journalist, security guard, and event organizer, accompanied the band on tour for the first time in 1993 – and has not lost sight of them since. This is their story.

Volume 1 tells the story of the band's development, as well as its public perception.

Volume 2 is dedicated to the fans. Klaus Farin interviewed more than 2,100 of them in March and April 2017 for this volume.

About the author: Klaus Farin, born in Gelsenkirchen in 1958, has lived in Berlin since 1980 – thanks to punk. After working as a school newspaper editor and fanzine maker, concert organizer and security, bookseller and journalist, he is now a freelance author and lecturer, traveling to schools and universities, youth clubs and correctional facilities, academies and companies. Various publications on skinheads, football fans, Gothics, Karl May and others (most recently: Frei.Wild. Hirnkost 2016).
