Youth Radio DT64 – Mass Medium and Mass Movement

Heiko Hilker / Alexander Pehlemann / Andreas Ulrich / Jörg Wagner (Eds.)

From Special Studio to Social Radio

Established in 1964 for the Deutschlandtreffen of the Freie Deutsche Jugend, DDR youth radio DT64 developed first as a "youth studio" and from 1986 as an independent station, becoming the most important voice for subculturally interested youth in the GDR. The station survived the GDR and even the planned shutdown for 1991, for which an extremely dedicated listener movement fought – initially partially succeeding, but ultimately failing.

Under the impression of this drama, various insiders and outsiders described the essential chapters of DT64's history in "DT64 – The Book on Youth Radio 1964–1993," edited by former DT64 journalists Jörg Wagner and Andreas Ulrich. The book quickly sold out and is now finally being made accessible again on the occasion of 60 years of DT64.

"Power from the Eastside!", quoting a jingle that became a battle slogan, is a new edition that updates the original book in its expansion and supplements it with further illustrations and materials.
